Are the creative industries of BC Suffering? I doubt it.

It all started with some SPAM which lead to an intriguing statement in the headline of an email:

"The creative industries of BC are suffering. With your help, Matt Toner (NDP candidate, False Creek) wants to reverse this trend."

WTF?

Some years ago I had promised an acquaintance that I would take a look at his work, as a comic artist.
He seemed like an interesting guy who I met when he was working in a paint store, and I was curious about his passion for comics.

I signed up at Zeros2Heros website, looked around and promptly forgot aboout it.
Comics wasn't my thing at the time but I could see there was a creative force.

Three years later I get an email ... unsolicited. Keep in mind, I do not support the NDP under any circumstances. I was right to be annoyed, and as we get closer to our provincial election I am going to get even more vocal, as is my right.

So I am curious. How does an NDP candidate get into my email? So I follow the links and discover the following under the banner of PlaceSpeak.

At Tuesday's town hall, one message came through loud and clear: the people working in our creative industries want the politicians of BC to listen, think and act.
This group is the first step in that process.
Matt Toner, the BC NDP candidate for False Creek, wants to make sure your ideas are heard, understood and incorporated into the NDP's game plan for creativity and innovation.
Matt comes from Vancouver's creative industries: since moving here in 2001, he has designed videogames, produced television shows, developed mobile apps and lectured at several post-secondary schools in the city.  Along the way, he also founded Zeros 2 Heroes Media, an award-winning convergent media company based in Gastown.  Matt understands the opportunities and challenges that we face all too well.
He also sees the enormous potential for a vibrant and properly supported creative cluster.  Not only will this produce jobs that are cleaner, greener, better paid and highly skilled, it will also put BC on a path to future prosperity.  One that isn't dependent on pipelines.
So here's how you can get involved:
1.  Join this group - you have skin in this game, so don't sit on the sidelines.
2.  Speak up and engage - this crowdsourcing process only works if people share their ideas.
3.  Tell your friends - we need more voices, from all corners of the creative industries.

In return, here's what we will do:

1.  Matt will take part in the discussions - between now and the election, he can't possibly meet with every concerned creative in this city... but this forum is not a bad place to hear your thoughts and concerns.

2.  Matt will develop the best ideas - working with people through this forum, he will make sure that he understands the issue, the pitfalls and the opportunities.

3.  Matt will feed the best of the best into the policy process - bear in mind that there is no guarantee that these will get adopted: there are many other factors at work!  But Matt will make sure they are considered, evaluated and shared with the right people.

There's no question that the best policies come from the people.  Here is a unique chance for you to plug directly into that process... all from the comfort of your computer.

So, please, make your clicks count!
